Have you been looking at your bookcases during lockdown, wondering why you’re holding onto shelves full of books you don’t read? Maybe you just want to declutter having spent so long in the same four walls? It could even be the case of hopefully moving house soon and getting rid of some stuff you no long need so you don’t have to move it with you. What can you do with them? Where to sell old books? Where to sell old textbooks? What can you do with them to get rid but also make a little bit of cash? Let’s have a look.

where to sell old books

Facebook Marketplace

If you want to sell for a decent price and have the buyer collect, with cash in hand, Facebook Marketplace is for you. There are no fees involved and you can sell items super quickly. My first sale on Facebook Marketplace was picked up within the hour. If you have a good range of books, maybe even bundle them up by author or genre. There are so many people stuck indoors, they might want some new novels to read.

We Buy Books

Maybe you want a set price for your books so you know how much you’re going to earn from the sale? Go to We Buy Books and you’ll get instant cash offers for the books you want to sell. They claim to pay the most and offer the fastest payments. If you’re looking for some where to sell old books, this could be the perfect avenue. Be sure to send your books in secure packaging to make sure there are no damages to your books in transit. There are some great options for eco-friendly packaging in the UK.

Music Magpie

You have likely seen Music Magpie advertised on the TV and online. They buy your old DVDs, CDs, games, tech and also books. You’ll be offered a set price for the books and even be able to select a courier to collect the box of books from your door, for free. When the books arrive at the Music Magpie HQ, you’ll get paid into your bank account.

Ziffit

Ziffit have a decent app (as do Music Magpie) and it’s a very similar service. Simply scan the ISBN number and you’ll be given a set price for your items. They claim to pay the most for your books. With more than one company saying this, I’m unsure who to believe. So if you’re looking at where to sell old books for the highest price, you might want to check more than one company.

The Book Buyer

The Book Buyer will offer you a decent cash in hand price for your old and rare books. The promise a premium offer, a personal service and a quick turnaround, wherever you are in the UK.

eBay

You could always choose to sell on eBay. This might also give you an idea about how much the books are actually worth. When you use the eBay app, you can scan the ISBN number using the camera on your phone. If there are other items on there you will be given information about how much they sold for and the starting bids they began at. This helps you to figure out how much you can expect to earn from your books. It might also flag up some rare or antique books which are worth a lot more. You don’t want to let these go for a cheap price!

Potential Antiques

With the mention of potential antiques, if you think you have something worth a bit of money, get it valued. Don’t just sell it to the first person to offer you some cash or set the asking price too low. This could set you up with cash for the year, maybe even life! Get it valued and sell it to an antiques shop or proper book dealer if it has a lot of value to it.

Donate To A School

Maybe you are wondering where to sell old textbooks? Why sell them at all? Could you donate them to a school, college or university so students who can’t afford them could have access to them? This is what I did with some of my old university books. Yes, they had a few miles on the clock and they were the third edition when perhaps the book releases were now up to the eighth or ninth edition. But if they can help someone who can’t afford them, it’s worth it. Where to sell old textbooks? Don’t sell, donate! Above all, you can give something back and inspire the next generation.

Now is the time to clear out your bookshelves and organise what you want in your home. Above all, clutter isn’t good for the mind and maybe clearing out some books could lead to a little bit of cash to help with your household bills and 2021 finances.
