When the end of the tax year looms or you have paperwork to file in January, how does it make you feel? What state are your accounts in? If they are well maintained and kept on top of, you will have nothing to worry about. However, what many of us feel, is anxiety. We often fail to keep things in order and that can impact our mental and physical wellbeing down the line, as well as potentially upend our business. Let’s have a look at the importance of keeping accounts in order.

Keep Stress At A Minimum
When you are running a business there can be quite a bit of stress. Especially if you are a sole trader, doing everything from washing the loos to organising the finances. Sometimes things slip. That isn’t ideal as we want to maintain everything and once things start to slip, they can continue to slip quickly until we pick them up. However, that juggle sometimes means something else is dropped instead. If we keep our books maintained and stay on top of our accounts, it will be one less thing to stress about. Yes, we need to make time to ensure they are kept in order, but it is worth it in the long run.
Know Your Financial Position
What do you do if you want to expand your business or buy some new equipment? Are you able to show yourself if the investment will be worth it? If you can even afford it? When we stay on top of our accounts, we know the financial position that we are in. This puts you in a better place to make decisions. You have the information you need right there. There is no fretting or worrying about what the numbers are. It is on a document or on your screen in black and white.
It will answer your questions for you. Can you afford this? Yes. Will it payback? Maybe not quite as quickly as you hope but yes, within a certain amount of time. You have the information to run things properly. So often we struggle with this and if you do, there is no shame in that. There is help you can access like a tax helpline. It’s not easy for everyone and certainly not easy to keep in order. So use the help available if you need that helping hand.

Make Life Easier
Overall, having your accounts in order in a way you can understand and maintain, makes life easier. If you put in a little bit of time and effort regularly to stay on track, you won’t freak out and need to find a spare couple of days, which easily turns into a week, right before those submissions need to be made. You can even risk fees if you file paperwork late, so you can quickly find yourself stressed, annoyed and owing money! Life can be hard enough, especially if you are running a business. If you keep those books and accounts properly, you will live a happier and probably healthier life.
