We all way to help the world out. We’re using more resources from the planet every year than the planet actually has to offer. We’re using as much as 50% extra. That’s terrifying. What changes can we make that will actually make a difference? There are simple ways to make a lessen our environmental impact, conserve energy and save money in the process. We’ve compiled seven of the best!

Hang Your Washing Out

One of my favourite things to do is to take advantage of a good weather day and hang our family washing out to dry. We do have a tumble dryer, but I only use it if we really have to. You can just feel the energy being used by it as it warms up your clothing and removes the water. Hanging washing on a line outside has been done for centuries. Using the sun, warmth and wind to make our clothes dry again is so simple. Even using an clothes maiden is preferential to throwing a load in the dryer. It might take a couple of days to dry fully inside, compared to an hour in the dryer or half a day on the line weather depending, but it is free. It also helps to conserve energy as it takes a lot to run your a tumble dryer.

Switch Stuff Off

You can conserve energy in a ridiculously way by simply switching stuff off when you’re not using it. From television sets to desktop computers, lights to kitchen appliances, when they’re not in use, hit the off button. Simple.

Change Your Lightbulbs

Modern LED lightbulbs cost a little bit more but use a lot less energy. They also have a longer life so you’ll not have to replace them as often. By upgrading the bulbs in your home, you’ll conserve energy and they’ll pay for themselves in the long run.

Set Your Thermostat To Work

Lots of us have thermostats who don’t really use the programmable aspect of them to the full capacity. Most of us as a weekly routine that we plan for. This means you can plan your energy usage too. There is no point in heating a house that no one is in. Plan for your heating to come on just before you come home and just before you get up in the morning. Ensure it’s a comfortable temperature for the days you work from home. Have it go off at the time you usually go to bed.

Ensure Energy Efficiency

When was the last time you bought a new appliance? Maybe it was a dishwasher or perhaps a new kettle? Did you look at how energy efficient the appliance was before you parted with your money? Sometimes it can be worth paying a little more for a more energy efficient machine because the running costs are less! Do your bit for the environment and to conserve energy by checking the efficiency of the new products you buy.

Close Those Air Leaks

Air leaks in the home can suck all the heat from your home. That annoying draft under the back door or through the living room window can make life not only uncomfortable but more expensive for you as a homeowner. You’re having to pay more to heat your home as warmth is escaping Close those air leaks with caulk or weather strips. You’ll be so glad you did!

Insulation Is Your Friend

Our seventh and final tip to conserve energy is to understand that insulation is your friend. Double glazing, loft insulation, cavity insulation are just a few areas you could improve in your home. It can all make a difference in the way you keep your home warm, the energy you use to do so and the price you pay as well.
